10 reasons an MES implementation may be delayed

From Greywise, we assist manufacturing companies with implementing MOMS solutions, including, of course MES (Manufacturing Execution System).

One of our main concerns is to avoid unnecessary delays. Yet unfortunately, often beyond our control, we see delays occur. Based on our experience, we have described 10 reasons that can cause delays in an MES implementation.

1. Incomplete requirements.
One of the most common reasons for delays in MES implementation is incomplete or unclear requirements. If requirements are not well defined, the project team may have to spend additional time addressing issues that could have been avoided the requirements were clear beforehand. You often see here that the coordination regarding the requirements between the production company and the supplier/system integrator is insufficient.
2. Lack of expertise
Implementing an MES can be a complex process that requires expertise in both technical and functional areas. If the team responsible for implementation does not have the required expertise, they may have to spend additional time, which can delay the project.
3. Lack of resources
Sufficient resourcers, including personnel, time and funding, are essential for successful implementation of an MES system. A lack of resources can cause delays in the implementation process.
4. Integration challenges
Integrating MES with existing systems such as ERP, PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) and SCADA can be complex. This can lead to delays and technical difficulties in the implementation process.
5. Customization
Some companies may have specific requirements that are not met by out-of-the-box MES solutions. This can lead to delays as customizations are developed and integrated into the system, also known as customization.
6. Poor planning
Lack of proper planning can lead to delays in MES implementation. It is essential to identify the goals and requirements of the MES implementation and create a detailed project plan with clear milestones and deadlines.
7. Challenges in data migration
Migrating data from legacy systems to the new MES can also be a complex and time-consuming process. If the data migration is not properly planned and executed, it can lead to inconsistencies in the data, which can cause delays in implementation.
8. Change Management
Implementing a new MES can require significant changes in processes and workflows, which can be challenging for employees. If change management is not handled properly, it can lead to resistance and delays in implementation.
9. Unforeseen problems
Unforeseen problems such as hardware failures, software errors and network connectivity issues can also cause delays in the MES implementation process.
10. Delays in testing and validation.
Testing and validation are crucial aspects of MES implementation, and delays in these activities can have a significant impact on the project timeline.
